Student Co-operatives:  Their Potential As An Instrument for the Youth Development

Co-operative movement has an increasing role to play in India . Co-operative instills community feeling among the members since it is of the members, by the members and for the members. In this report Dr. Shridhara Maniyani evaluates the potential of the student cooperatives in facilitating youth development.

 The study report is presented in six chapters. Chapter 1 gives the basic framework of research and the methodology adopted for the styudy. Chapter 2 gives a brief background of the socio-economic, features and profile of youth and student cooperatives in India . The third chapter analyses the student co-operative as a potential instrument for youth development. It also reviews student co-operatives in its historical context. Chapter 4 deals with student co-operatives’ current status in India and the next chapter discusses the profile and performance if selected sample cooperatives and also dwells on their major problem areas. The last chapter provides suggestions for using the network of student cooperatives to empower the youth and find solutions to the problems faced by youth in India .
